Exercise 4: Focal Lengths – With Variable Focal Lengths

This exercise is intended to make us aware of the different effects different focal lengths and therefore how changing lenses effects the perspective and angle of view.

I chose to photograph a large factory building in my local town from a high vantage point as I felt this gave me an interesting perspective and a great potential range as I worked from my 70-300mm telephoto lens to my 18-55mm wide angle lens.

The difference in perspective is clearly apparent when looking closely at the center of the image, as it flattens the scene. Not only with individual object but when looking closer the relationship between the buildings in the immediate foreground to the focal point are obviously flatter and give us less depth. The other obvious difference is the angel of view given with each lens and focal length with the larger the focal length the narrower the angle of view became.
